Water Lilies

Sue Jackson

This water lilies mosaic is a private piece of work created by Sue Jackson. It was made by applying the tiles directly onto the wall tile by tile and took about 20 hours to complete. The mosaic is a focal point in a wall at the back of a veranda which overlooks a lake, which was the inspiration for the water lilies theme taken from a cross stitch pattern. For the evenings the mosaic is feature-lit by a spotlight and adds a dash of colour and interest to an otherwise bland wall. It has provided much interest from family, friends and neighbours and apart from the water lilies several people can see Robin Hood looking back at them.

The size of the mosaic is approximately 145cm wide by 72cm tall. The tiles used are from the Azurra Original range. Mike and Sue found that using the Azurra website made life very easy when choosing colours and quantities for the mosaic.

Sue is teacher by profession with an Honours degree in Art History. Her main artistic interests centre around water colour painting and her favourite artists are the French impressionists. This is Sue’s first attempt at Moasic but possibly not her last as she has plans to create a coffee table top for the veranda which she and her husband Mike designed and built entirely themselves during the wet summer of 2009.

ABOUT THE INSTALLATION

INSPIRATION AND IDEAS

The theme of this mosaic was inspired by a cross-stitch pattern of water lilies that fitted with the waterside location. Cross-stitch patterns are ideal for mosaics created using complete, square tiles. If you match the colours in the pattern to the pallet of colours in the range of tiles you are using you will find it easy to estimate how many tiles of each colour you require and have a pattern to follow when creating your mosaic. You will also be able to calculate how big your finished mosaic will be, or alternatively select an area of the pattern that will fit the space you have available.

Use smaller tiles (such as Azurra Craft Mini 1cm x 1cm mosaics) to create a smaller or a more detailed mosaic, such as for a table mat or an intricate design. Use larger tiles (such as Azurra Original 2cm x 2cm mosaics) for a larger mosaic that will normally be seen from a greater distance, such as an outdoor mosaic or a mosaic for a corporate entrance hall.
