Sands of Time

Bognor Regis Community Mosaic

 
 

This mosaic was commissioned in 2006 by Sue Holmes, the Events Officer responsible for managing the highly successful Sands of Time Seaside Festivals at Bognor Regis, and part sponsored by Azurra Mosaics.


The mosaic was a community artwork, under the guidance of Kat Hutchison, with people being invited to join in over the weekend. It was then finished by a group of volunteers and is now installed in the Hotham Arts Centre. The piece is in three sections. Each part has a sun, a sea and a sand element and the whole piece is linked with three ‘waves’.

ABOUT THE INSTALLATION

INSPIRATION AND IDEAS

This mosaic features separate panels linked by the waves. This is an excellent idea as it creates a 3 dimensional effect drawing the eye into the scene - a mosaic equivalent of 3D decoupage - and allows the mosaic to ‘spill’ over the edges of the background mosaic.


You can create this effect easily yourself by taking parts of your image and making them in relief. Cut out the appropriate shape in your backing board and either stick it directly to the main backing board (to give a shallow relief) or use spacers to move it further away from the background mosaic to create a deeper 3D effect. You can experiment with paper cut-outs before committing to your final design, and can create very interesting effects with multiple layers.


Remember that from all angles except face-on people will be able to see behind raised layers. It is therefore important to mosaic behind them on the main background board so that the board isn’t visible.
