Great Fire of London

Year 2 Hensingham Primary School

As part of their studies of The Great Fire of London, which is part of Key Stage 1, the 2008-09 Year 2 class at Hensingham Primary School in Cumbria designed and made pictures of burning buildings.

They used small, 1cm x 1cm Azurra Craft Mini tiles with black tiles representing the silhouettes of the buildings. The scarlet, orange and yellow tiles represented the flames and the grey tiles represented the smoke gathering in the skyline.

As a school, Hensingham Primary were able to benefit from the 10% educational use discount given by Azurra Mosaics. For more details on this discount, please email us.

Julia Wilson, the year 2 teacher, says that the children loved designing and creating their mosaic pictures. They also worked in small groups to make houses in the style of those in London in the era of the Great Fire, which can be seen in the Wall Display picture.

ABOUT THE INSTALLATION

INSPIRATION AND IDEAS

You can make smaller and / or more detailed images without needing to split tiles by using smaller mosaics. Azurra Craft Mini tiles are ideal as they are only 1cm x 1cm in size and available in a wide range of colours.

Designs can be created and refined on squared paper using coloured pencils or pens and then copied using the mosaic tiles. For indoor use PVA glue is simple to use and dries clear so it doesn’t spoil the effect if some gets onto the front of the tiles. Because glass mosaics are impermeable it takes longer for the glue to dry completely so leave them somewhere flat for at least 24 hours if possible.
