Circles of Life
Marzzella Munro
This mosaic is a private piece of work created by Marzzella Munro and took about 10 hours to create. Marzzella says that it was great fun working with the tiles and that she is now working on her next mosaic project!
Marzzella was inspired with pictures on the internet, a love for Art and Spanish, Italian influences.
Titled "Circles of Life" each circle represents a family member.
The fireplace is approximately 90cm wide by 84 cm high. The recess in the centre is about 30cm deep. The tiles used are from the Azurra Original and Azurra Mini ranges with a handful of tiles from the Gold Marbled, Gold Streaked and Clear4 ranges.

ABOUT THE INSTALLATION
INSPIRATION AND IDEAS
This mosaic makes great use of the fact that mosaic tiles can be used in regular lines or as flowing curves - in this case circles. It uses broken tiles to fill the areas where the pattern moves from circles to regular rows and columns of tiles and it mixes small and large tiles together in the same design.
You can create irregular shaped tile pieces using a tile nipper, but if you don't have one available then place your tiles on a few sheets of paper on a firm surface, cover them with a few more layers of paper and hit them reasonably firmly with a hammer. Take care not to hit them too much or you may end up with dust!
Never scoop or slide the broken pieces with your bare hands. Instead pick the pieces you want to keep carefully so that you don't get tiny pieces of glass in your fingers before transferring them into a container for storage (ice cream tubs or large margarine tubs are ideal for this as they have lids which avoids spills if they are dropped and makes them easy to stack!).
Finally, fold the unwanted broken pieces of tile into the paper and dispose of carefully.
SAFETY FIRST
It is always sensible to wear gloves and goggles when you are splitting tiles.
Think carefully before allowing children to use split pieces of tile. Use your judgement to decide how competent they are and whether they can apply split tiles safely. If in any doubt always have safety as a prime consideration and consider using complete smaller tiles (such as the Azurra Craft Mini 1cm x 1cm mosaic tiles) instead.
