BIRDS

Carole Miles

The mosaic was created by the visual artist Carole Miles and commissioned for the Welland Centre, Kettering. The birds featured on the panels are Avocet, Teal, Kingfisher and Sandpiper, which are the ward names.

The mosaic is fitted to a curving wall with colours inspired by Clarice Cliff and the layout is reminiscent of a patchwork quilt.

ABOUT THE INSTALLATION

INSPIRATION AND IDEAS

Designing your mosaic with repeating rectangular, square or circular elements makes it easy for different people to contribute their own parts to a larger picture. Each of the smaller elements can be produced separately and then easily combined to make the final design.

Lots of different materials can be incorporated into mosaic art. In this design there are flat and curved round tiles side by side with whole and split square glass mosaic tiles. These have been used to add interest and focus and can give the final mosaic a more 'tactile' finish.

When including other materials in your design ensure that your adhesive and grout is suitable for all of the different types of material used. For outdoors installations ensure that other materials will be as robust, frost-proof, weather-proof and colour-fast as the mosaic tiles you are using.
